What effect does height have on artificial grass?

The height in the artificial grass has been used as an indicator of quality, meaning that the higher the height, the higher the quality, but is that true?  

Artificial turf has various parameters that must be considered when comparing, and the height is one of them, but not the only one, there are also:  

  • The Decitex of the thread 
  • Microns of thread thickness  
  • The number of stitches per square meter. 
  • The raw material of the thread (PE, PP or PA) 
  • The shape or structure of the thread 
  •  

As you can see, there are many more aspects to consider besides the height of the artificial turf.

However, let’s see how height influences such important aspects as resilience, feel or aesthetics.   

What is height and what influence does it have on artificial turf?

The height in the artificial turf is the length of the hair from the base to the top, and considering that the fibers of the turf are flexible, means that it has consequences. If we could compare several grass models made with the same threads, same gauge and same number of stitches, that are all the same but with different heights, we would observe the following: 

  1. The higher the height, the greater the difficulty for the fibers to remain upright on their own. This means that as the height increases, we will observe that the resilience worsens, and vice versa, the lower the height, the better the resilience.  

2. Related to the previous, greater height usually means better feeling. Due to a greater height and flexibility, the fibers bend more easily and therefore offer less resistance, which translates into better feeling. However, the opposite also occurs, lower height means worse feeling, since they are less flexible and therefore offer greater resistance.

3. The height also affects the aesthetics, as the height increases, the fibers lose verticality, offering a more “wild” or messy appearance, and vice versa, the lower the height, the more it looks as a freshly trimmed grass.  

 

What is the perfect height? It depends on the use you are going to give to the turf, and the aspects that you appreciate the most.
