Technical aspects of artificial grass

Types of thread used in manufacturing artificial turf .

Depending on the use and purpose to which a certain type of artificial turf is intended, different types of threads can be used for its manufacturing process.

These might be:

Monofilament:

  • As the name implies, they are threads formed by a single filament with enough consistency to be stitched. This thread may vary in width and thickness.

It’s the most commonly used type of thread in artificial turf for landscaping and it’s usually stitched by twisting 8 fibers together, which are separated again when trimmed at the desired height in the production process.

As we will explain later, the monofilament thread can also have different structures.

Fibrillated:

  • The fiber is wider and is divided into filaments forming a kind of grid between them, without becoming unique as in the case of monofilament. Its behavior is different from monofilament, so it’s used for manufacturing artificial turf that requires certain characteristics such as better retention of the infill materials. That’s why it can be recommended for sports that require the load to remain more stable. It usually has a less natural appearance than monofilament.

Textured:

  • Also called curly, it’s used as filler, having a height below the monofilament and whose main characteristics are the contribution of resistance and elasticity that helps the recovery of straight fibers.

It can also be used alone for certain sports and depending on its use will also vary its composition and color.
