Surely you will have seen many websites or even in artificial turf technical sheets saying that artificial turf is fire retardant, but is it true? 

Before getting into more technical aspects, we must say that in normal conditions (burning cigarette butt, barbecue grill coal) artificial turf is safe. That said, we will briefly explain how materials are classified according to their behavior against fire.  

To check how materials that can be found in a house react to fire, and classify them according to their behavior, there is an established method and classification, known as Euro Class, based on UNE EN 13501-1. There is a section specifically for floor surfaces.  

These tests are intended for indoors, where a fire is potentially much more dangerous than outdoors. Inside a house we have carpets, curtains, cushions, sofas, wooden furniture, … various elements that with a small fire can easily ignite, spread the fire and increase the temperature quickly.
