Technical aspects of artificial grass

Is artificial turf fire retardant?

Surely you will have seen many websites or even in artificial turf technical sheets saying that artificial turf is fire retardant, but is it true?

Before getting into more technical aspects, we must say that in normal conditions (burning cigarette butt, barbecue grill coal) artificial turf is safe. That said, we will briefly explain how materials are classified according to their behavior against fire.

To check how materials that can be found in a house react to fire, and classify them according to their behavior, there is an established method and classification, known as Euro Class, based on UNE EN 13501-1. There is a section specifically for floor surfaces

These tests are intended for indoors, where a fire is potentially much more dangerous than outdoors. Inside a house we have carpets, curtains, cushions, sofas, wooden furniture, … various elements that with a small fire can easily ignite, spread the fire and increase the temperature quickly.

This is precisely what is simulated in the tests. The sample is heated with a radiant panel and subsequently set on fire and its reaction to the fire is reviewed. The lab that performs the tests issues a certificate with the name of the product tested and with its reaction to fire classification.

Euro Class establish the following classifications for floorings:

That said, what reaction to fire classification does artificial turf usually has?

Most of the them have the Efl classification, and some, such as our HighTech products, have the Cfl fire reaction classification, which is usually the requested one for artificial turf indoors. As we can see from the classifications, artificial turf is not fire retardant.

Is artificial turf safe?

As we have said before, Euro Class is meant for indoors, where there are many combustible elements, which can cause the fire to spread quickly and produce high temperatures.

The biggest danger for artificial grass in a garden is a barbecue. The charcoal, an accidental spillage of flammable liquid, a cigarette butt… The result? A hole the size of the grill, a burned fence where the liquid has fallen or melted threads next to the butt. Small damages, very localized and that do not extend, so we can say that:

Yes, artificial turf is safe.

If you’re looking for an indoor artificial turf, look for one that has a Cfl-s1 fire reaction classification.

We recommend those of our HighTech line with this classification:

  • Aberdeen II
  • Melange Arena II
  • Inverness

For terraces we recommend our turf designed especially for this purpose, also achieving Cfl-s1 certificate in the last tests:
