It is often asked how long does artificial turf last? Let’s look at all the aspects that influence in order to reach a conclusion.
When someone asks us about the durability of artificial turf, we always answer “It depends”, but …. what does it depend on?
Well, it depends on several factors such as:
- The geographical area in which it will be installed. It is not the same if it is installed in Norway than in Andalusia, the hours of sunshine and therefore the intensity of UV rays are not the same.
- The quality of the artificial turf yarn. A lawn made with a few Decitex yarns and a few microns thick will not last as long as another one made with yarns with more Decitex and more micronsthat is to say, thicker. The latter will last much longer and in better conditions.
- The quality of the lawn finish. Although it is not something that is not usually given importance, it is very important, because the fact that the finish or latex is not of good quality, means that it can end up breaking or even disappearing, so that the fibers can easily come loose.
- Proper maintenance. Although artificial turf saves us a lot of work and effort compared to natural grass, that does not mean that it does not need maintenance. Maintaining the lawn when required will extend the life of the artificial turf.
But apart from all the above factors the above factors, the most importantthe most important or the factor that will have the greatest impact on the durability of our lawn is: the use that is going to be given to it, and its intensity.
If we make a comparison with cars, the same model of car will not last the same number of years for a person who uses it to go to and from work, and some sporadic trips that make between 10,000 and 15,000 km/year, than a salesman, for whom the car is his work tool, and who can easily make 50,000 or 60,000 km/year.
The same is true for turf.
Let’s imagine the same artificial turf model with two completely opposite uses:
Case 1:
Ugarden in which the function of the artificial turf is mainly aesthetic, as it is almost never walked on it is almost never walked on.
Case 2:
The artificial grass around the swimming pool of a campsite, where children run and play, while the grown-ups lie in the sun.
Clearly in the first case, the turf will last much longer, and its useful life will probably go beyond 15 years. In the second case, the artificial turf will suffer a much more intensive use, which, logically, will cause a faster wear of it (as in the example of the commercial car) and will reduce its useful life.
It is very important to be clear about the intended use ofthe artificial turf, in order to choose the rightone , as it is a long-term investment.
In Albergrass we try to maximize the durability of our artificial grass, that’s why we always use thicker yarns that are more durable against UV rays and normal wear and tear due to friction.
We also manufacture our products with quality backing and latex, which provide flexibility without breaking, to ensure long-term anchorage of the yarns.
If you are clear about the use you want to give to your lawn, let us know and we will advise you on your choice.
