Installing artificial turf in your garden
For the installation of artificial turf in your garden to be perfect, it is advisable to take into account a series of factors: shape, measurements, type of soil, drainage, slopes, trees and plants, fixings…
In Albergrass we tell you step by step how to install artificial turf in your garden.
First step: design your artificial turf garden
Our first tip before starting is to make a sketch or drawing of what your garden looks like. Draw the areas you want to cover with synthetic grass. Don’t forget to mark on this sketch any trees or plants or any obstacles in your garden.
Once you have drawn your garden, make the necessary measurements to know how much artificial grass you need. These measurements are essential so that you do not fall short when buying the rolls of grass.
Synthetic grass rolls are two meters wide and the length can be different. It is important to do the math to know how much you need.
Second step: site preparation
The installation of artificial turf requires some previous steps to prepare the ground. You always have to lay the turf on a hard and smooth surface. So depending on the type of terrain you will have to do more or less preparation work.
- Land of smooth materials
If your garden has a concrete floor, terrazzo or any smooth surface, the preparation is much simpler.
Before installing artificial turf in your garden with smooth soil, clean the ground well. It is important that there are no impurities (stones, branches…). The smoother and cleaner the ground, the softer and smoother the tread will be.
When the soil is completely clean and free of impurities, it is very useful to cover it with an elastic and draining base such as our CareTech 10. This base will provide greater comfort to the space in the case of choosing a grass of lower height.
- Rough terrain surfaces
In case your garden is made of soil , it is important to smooth the ground and eliminate all the weeds in the areas where you are going to place artificial grass.
It is essential to make sure you kill all the weeds and ensure that they do not come back. To do this, our advice is that before installing the artificial turf in your garden, pour a layer of gravel (gravel mixed with sand) that you must compact and smooth with a vibrating tray. Then, on top of this layer, place a weed control mesh.
Ensures good drainage
Regardless of the type of soil your garden has. In addition to preparing the soil, it is essential to ensure good drainage. To do this, make sure that the slopes are the necessary ones so that water pockets do not form on the lawn. Do not forget to mark elements such as drains or traps that allow proper drainage.
Third step: laying and fastening the artificial turf
Spread the rolls of grass, bearing in mind that they are flawed in the direction of rolling. It is essential that you place the pieces in the same direction so that the result is aesthetically perfect.
In Albergrass we advise you to leave about 5 cm extra at each end for a more professional finish on the perimeter. Once the lawn is laid, cut the excess pieces with a cutter.
Fourth step: finishing touches
With all the pieces in place, it’s time for the finishing touches: gluing and fixing the artificial turf, spreading silica sand and brushing.
For gluing you can use PU glue or self-adhesive tape. It is important to perform this task with caution so as not to stain the lawn. In addition, it is advisable to use a spatula to spread the glue correctly.
It is useful to spread silica sand for a more professional and lasting result. We recommend spreading 4 to 5 kg of sand per square meter of lawn.
The last step is the final brushing. With this step the sand is better distributed and the synthetic mantle is given all its verticality.
