Tree pruning tools

In addition to knowledge, you need a number of tools to perform tree pruning.

These pruning tools are usually:

  • Small pruning shears: for thinner branches.
  • Two-handed pruning shears: for slightly thicker branches.
  • Pole shears: for pruning at height.
  • Saw: for very thick and hard trunks or branches.
  • Chainsaw: for trees or branches of great thickness and size.
  • Hedge trimmers: for shaping hedges.
  • Grass shears: for cutting grass or thin branches.

Choose the correct tool according to the type of tree and size of the branch to be pruned.

Protect yourself adequately

You cannot forget the tools or utensils that you must use for your protection. Tree pruning tools require safe use.

We recommend that when pruning trees: protect your hands with gloves to avoid cuts, your eyes with goggles and your head with a helmet, especially when pruning at height or large branches.

When to prune trees

Each type or species of tree has its own pruning schedule. The general rule is that pruning should be done during the vegetative period of the tree, i.e. when it is growing. In most species this period coincides with the end of winter.

A tip: in the case of fruit trees, it should not be done if the tree has already flowered, as this will reduce its production. Nor should it be pruned if night temperatures are too cold.

The perfect cut for tree pruning

For pruning to be correct, in addition to the right season for each tree, it also requires a perfect cut.

We will cut the branch at its point of union with the mother branch. Experts recommend that the blade of the scissors, saw… be placed in the inner zone and the other blade in the outer zone.

The cut should be clean, in one go and should not be a straight cut (better slightly inclined), to avoid tearing it is important that the tools are well sharpened.
