Are you thinking of buying cheap artificial grass? Then this is of interest to you.
The good thing is clear: the price is cheaper. That is not open to discussion, but what is open to debate is whether or not it is really worth paying a cheap price for artificial turf. What’s wrong with cheap artificial turf?
The downside is that after a short time it will look more like a flattened carpet than a lawn garden.
This is what happens when you buy a cheap artificial grass in which the manufacturer uses low quality fibers to lower the price. This type of grass does not recover its verticality after being walked on and with use it gets all squashed and matted.
When this happens the result is that you have saved money on the purchase, but a few months later you have a flattened green carpet in the garden. That will probably mean that in less than two years you will want to change the lawn installation because it is neither beautiful nor practical. And changing it means paying again, which is bad.
The bad thing is also that the cheap artificial turf has a low quality finish, and in many cases well disguised with the appearance that it has a lot of latex. But…. nothing further from the truth, it has a second backing of a black non-woven fabric (same color as latex, what a coincidence) that separates easily. You would be saving money, but assuming that it is easy for the latex to disappear soon (see the photo above, the latex has disappeared, and the consequences would be similar to having a garden with natural grass full of bald patches and mud (as you can see in the photo below) leaving the grass fibers loose, and that is bad.
The downside is also that cheap artificial turf may not meet EU technical standards. Standards such as good UV resistance and color fastness. If that were the case you would be saving money on the price, but assuming that one day not too far away, your lawn will no longer be as bright green as it should be, and the fibers will break very easily. This happens when you buy a cheap artificial turf in which the manufacturer to lower the price uses fibers with few microns of thickness, ie almost transparent (look at the picture and see how you can read through the Asian fibers).
It is true that you would be saving money on the purchase, but the harmful UV rays will degrade the cheap grass much faster than a European one, so it is likely that after a few years of use you will have to uninstall it and deliver it for destruction and recycling. And all this is also bad.
So when you go to buy a cheap artificial turf look well the guarantees offered, look closely at the fibers that compose it and inform yourself well in relation to durability, resilience (verticality recovery), softness and compliance with standards, and even ask for references. You know what they say: sometimes cheap is expensive.
